Your Credit Union will not call, text or email you asking for your account information. Nor will we ask you to reveal your credit card number, PIN, security code or any other number because we have your account information on file. These are scams.
General Information about Common Scams
Often phishing scams use emails which appear to come from a trustworthy company and may warn of a problem that requires your attention. Their goal is to get your personal financial information such as account numbers, passwords, Social Security numbers, and other confidential information which they can use to access your accounts or charge on your credit cards. Often the email contains a link. Do not click on the link and do not provide any personal information. Here are some tips to follow:
- Never provide personal information in response to an unsolicited request.
- If you think the email could be legitimate, contact the financial institution or agency yourself instead of clicking on any links.
- Do not provide your password over the phone or to an unsolicited email request.
- Review your account statements regularly to ensure accuracy.
Financial institutions across the country have reported their members and customers are receiving fake text message (smishing) alerts. The text message indicates it is from Credit Union Services and advises the member to call the number provided in the text message to have their card reactivated.
CCUMD will never ask a member for this type of information using text messaging. These text messages often include a phone number to call to have a card activated. Delete these texts — they are scams.
